Rubanga Forest – The Green Heart of Lake Mburo National Park

What is Rubanga Forest?

Rubanga Forest is a tropical riverine forest ecosystem located in the southwestern section of Lake Mburo National Park, close to the shores of Lake Mburo.

Covering approximately 29 square kilometers, the forest forms a cool, shaded habitat that stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding savannah grasslands.

Its dense vegetation, rich biodiversity, and tranquil environment make it one of the most important ecological zones within the park

Landscape and Vegetation

Rubanga Forest is characterized by a lush, layered tropical canopy that creates a cool microclimate ideal for wildlife.

The forest vegetation includes:

  • Indigenous hardwood trees such as Albizia, Acacia, and Brachystegia
  • Thick undergrowth of shrubs and ferns

How to Access Rubanga Forest

Rubanga Forest is accessed from the park headquarters at Rwonyo, inside Lake Mburo National Park.

Travel route

  • Drive from Kampala via Masaka–Mbarara highway
  • Enter the park through Nshara or Sanga gate
  • Proceed to Rwonyo headquarters
  • Continue with a guided walk into Rubanga Forest

Access is strictly controlled and must be arranged through Uganda Wildlife Authority.
