Igongo Cultural Centre

Igongo Cultural Centre and Museum is one of the most important cultural and historical destinations in western Uganda. Located about 12 km from Mbarara along the Mbarara–Masaka highway, the centre offers visitors a deep and immersive experience into the traditions, history, and lifestyle of the Ankole people and neighboring communities.

Established in 2003 by historian and entrepreneur Apollo Karugaba, the centre was created to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of southwestern Uganda

History and Cultural Significance

Igongo Cultural Centre is built on land believed to have been a royal gathering site of the Ankole Kingdom, making it historically significant.

The area is closely linked to the famous Biharwe Eclipse of 1520, a solar eclipse that influenced regional political history and is still used by historians to date ancient reigns in the Great Lakes region.

This deep historical background makes Igongo not just a tourist site, but a living archive of Uganda’s past.

Eriijukiro Museum

The Eriijukiro Museum is the largest cultural museum in western Uganda and the centerpiece of the centre.
